At Whatmamaknits, every project starts with a style board.
Long before we cast on a new knitting or crochet pattern, we’re already imagining how we’ll wear it. Creating a style board helps us visualise outfits, decide which pieces in our wardrobe will work with a new knit, and often influences the colour we choose. Sometimes we’re drawn to a fresh seasonal shade that feels exciting and new. Other times, we return to our favourite palette of red, white, black and silver – colours that we know we’ll wear again and again.
Alongside our knitting patterns, we love sharing styling inspiration, wardrobe planning and practical packing advice. Fashion has always been about more than simply buying new clothes for us. We enjoy creating interesting outfits from pieces we already own, mixing in vintage finds, and incorporating handmade knits into everyday life.
Travel is another passion of ours, and whenever we travel, we travel light. Whether we’re exploring the cities of Northern Europe, enjoying a sunshine escape to Greece, or taking a short break somewhere in the UK, we plan our wardrobes carefully before we leave. We choose a colour palette, build outfits around it, and create looks that work with the size of our luggage. The result is less overthinking, less overpacking, and more time enjoying the trip.
That doesn’t mean we believe in boring capsule wardrobes. Quite the opposite. We love unexpected combinations, statement pieces, and outfits that feel personal rather than generic. Our approach is about making the most of what you already own, finding new ways to wear favourite pieces, and building wardrobes that work hard without losing their personality.
And, of course, we rarely travel without a project bag. If there’s a train journey, ferry crossing or flight involved, you’ll often find us knitting or crocheting along the way. Smaller projects such as accessories, scarves and lightweight knits are perfect travel companions and a wonderful way to slow down and enjoy the journey.
Here you’ll find styling ideas, packing guides, travel wardrobes, outfit inspiration and practical advice for wearing your handmade knits in the real world. We hope it inspires you to make, style, travel and wear your creations with confidence.
