Beginner-Friendly Garter Stitch Beanie – One-Ball Wonder

Looking for a quick, cosy, and beginner-friendly knitting project? This garter stitch beanie is perfect for beginners and can be completed with just one ball of chunky yarn! Ideal as a stash-buster project or a thoughtful handmade gift.


Materials

  • Yarn: 50g Chunky / Bulky Weight x 1 ball
  • Knitting Needles: 8mm UK (Size 11 US)
  • Sewing Needle: For weaving in ends

Sizes

  • One size – fits an average adult head (54cm circumference)

Abbreviations

  • K: Knit
  • K2tog: Knit 2 stitches together
  • sts: Stitches
  • GSt (Garter Stitch): Row 1 knit, Row 2 knit
  • {…}: Repeat instructions in brackets

Tension

  • 12 sts x 24 rows = 10cm square in garter stitch using 8mm needles

Pattern Overview

This simple yet stylish beanie:

Hat Pattern Instructions

  1. With 8mm needles, cast on 51 sts and work in GSt. Knit until the work measures approx. 15cm.
  2. Next Row: {K1, K2tog} repeat to end – 34 sts remain
  3. Next Row: Knit
  4. Next Row: K1, [K2tog, K1] repeat to end – 23 sts remain
  5. Next Row: Knit
  6. Next Row: K2tog repeat to last st, K1 – 12 sts remain
  7. Next Row: Knit
  8. Next Row: K2tog, repeat to end – 6 sts remain
  9. Next Row: Knit
  10. Break off 40cm yarn and thread through remaining sts

Finishing

  • Secure the yarn and sew seams together
  • Weave in ends
  • Your beanie is ready to wear! 😊
