The Easiest Starter Knit: a Cosy Scarf-Blanket For You and Baby

If you’re looking for a relaxing, beginner-friendly project, this scarf–blanket pattern is the perfect place to start. It’s knitted entirely in garter stitch, so you can settle into a simple rhythm while creating something genuinely useful and beautiful. Whether you’re expecting, have a little one already, or want to make a thoughtful gift for a friend, this project always feels special.

Why This Pattern Works for Beginners

Made in chunky yarn and worked on 6mm needles, it grows quickly—ideal if you want that satisfying “I can actually knit!” moment early on. Choose a yarn that fits your lifestyle:

  • Value chunky from King Cole is an excellent, easy-care option.
  • 100% wool gives a cosy, natural finish, though it needs a bit more care (and always watch out for moths!).

If you’re new to knitting, places like LoveCrafts are brilliant for picking up yarn, needles and all your essential supplies. They also offer clear how-to guides that walk you through the basics, making this pattern even more accessible. Our pattern was orginally published there.

A Versatile Knit You’ll Use Every Day

What makes this design truly special is its flexibility. Use it as a warm wrap while feeding, or thread buggy or car-seat straps through the simple armhole openings to turn it into a baby blanket that stays put. It’s an easy knit that becomes a keepsake—one that holds memories of quiet mornings, naps on the go, and all those tiny everyday moments.

If you prefer to knit for yourself, simply wear it as a cosy oversized scarf. One pattern, two uses—handmade pieces don’t get more practical than this.

Yarn Colour Ideas

Work it in one solid shade to match your outerwear or your baby’s buggy, go bold with dopamine stripes, or create modern colour blocks. More experienced knitters might even want to add a frill for something extra playful.
