The bear-themed baby jumper is worked seamlessly from the top down and is a brilliant introduction to top-down garment knitting. Designed in aran/worsted weight yarn, it features playful bear ears and an adorable bear face, with the nose and eyes added using simple embroidery guided by the schematic.

The jumper begins at the neckline, with the yoke worked flat to allow for neat neck shaping before joining in the round. Once joined, the body and sleeves are worked seamlessly in rounds, creating a comfortable, practical garment with no bulky seams. Sleeve stitches are placed on hold while the body is completed, then worked afterwards.

If you don’t have a set of four double-point needles, the sleeves can easily be worked flat and sewn up on completion, making this pattern flexible for different toolkits and skill levels. Stitches are picked up along the front and back neck edges to create a classic ribbed neckband for a snug, professional finish.

This is a pattern you’ll return to again and again. Once you’ve made the bear version, the jumper can be reused as a simple top-down basic—perfect for experimenting with self-striping or boucle yarns, bold contrast colours, or minimal, modern palettes. We knit ours in a classic teddy-bear shade, but the design lends itself beautifully to creative colour choices.

For best results, we recommend using a row counter to help keep track of shaping, and if you don’t have stitch markers, a small length of contrast yarn works just as well.
